A Message about Portable (a-frame) Signs

The City of Leavenworth’s Community Development Department is reaching out to ensure businesses are compliant with established city sign regulations in order to foster a consistent and safe visual environment that preserves the distinctive Old World Bavarian Alpine Theme of our city.

Recently, an increase in non-compliant portable (A-frame) signs within the Central Commercial District has been observed by the City.  If you think your sign might be in question or are unfamiliar with the code,  you can review the Leavenworth Municipal Code (LMC) Chapter 14.10 - SIGNS,  at this link prior to making any necessary adjustments.

Recreation Ambassador Report

Recreation Ambassador Program – Weekend Report 7/19 - 20

Weekend Summary:

Staff assisted visitors at Stuart Lake and Eightmile Trailheads this Friday, and are expanding their presence today (Monday) to include the always-busy Snow Lakes trailhead. Additionally, staff were stationed at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery during the third week of the parking lot closure, offering information about the river levels, shuttle service, and the Icicle Bridge put-in. The Hatchery parking lot will be locked for the remainder of the season, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service recommending that recreators do not float the river due to low water levels and the potential for harm to salmon spawning habitat.

Six volunteers from UV Young Life staffed the Stuart Lake, Eight Mile, and Icicle Gorge Trailheads. This weekend was particularly busy, with volunteers counting 878 vehicles parked at 1PM Saturday. Despite the heavy traffic, volunteers were able to direct visitor parking and keep the road accessible to both guests and emergency vehicles.

Another six volunteers from the Royal Bavarians were stationed at the E. Leavenworth Boat Launch, Barn Beach River Access, and Icicle Bridge River Access. Volunteers again counted a peak of 55 vehicles along Icicle Road near the Icicle Bridge put-in at 1pm. The City’s free shuttle continues to see heavy use.

Volunteer Impact:

  • Visitor Interactions: 2884 (+127 from last week, +352 river and +800 forest compared to the same week last year)
  • Surveys Conducted: 35 (28 Forest, 7 River)
  • Trash Removed: 7, 30 Gallon Bags

Survey Highlights (36 respondents):

Visitor Origin:

  • Five hikers and one river recreator surveyed were from Chelan County, with the remainder primarily domestic tourists.
  • Our furthest international visitor hailed from Germany, with other international respondents from Canada.
  • Due to the water level and Fish Hatchery closure, no surveyed visitors chose to float the Icicle.

Recreation Type:

  • Wenatchee River (Icicle Bridge put-in): 60% on tubes, 20% paddleboards, 20% miscellaneous
  • 90% of guests departing the river at Barn Beach were tubers.

Violations Reported:

  • Many cars parked in front of no parking signs at the Stuart Lake trailhead before volunteers began managing the parking situation.

Conditions Reported:

  • Most hikers were small groups, with approximately half planning to visit a local restaurant after their hike.
  • The human impact on the trail was particularly severe this week, with 25% of respondents mentioning trash along the trails.
  • Hikers continue to report overgrown trail conditions at all trails, and mention particularly a downed tree along the hike to Colchuck Lake.

Transportation & Parking

  • Trailhead parking continues to be a challenge, with the Stuart Lake parking lot filled before volunteers arrived.

Interested in volunteering? Individuals are encouraged to reach out to be placed with a non-profit, or on a backup volunteer list. For more information, please email Matt at Recreation@leavenworth.org
