Recreation Ambassador Program – Weekend Report August 8/9 & 8/10
|
Weekend Summary:
This weekend was one of our busiest, with volunteers counting 767 total vehicles parked at 1 PM Saturday. This Friday, staff assisted visitors at Stuart Lake, and Eightmile trailheads. Staff are now stationed at Snow Lakes trailhead Friday-Monday due to high usage.
Six volunteers from Marlin Handbell Ringers staffed the Stuart Lake, Eight Mile, and Icicle Gorge Trailheads. They managed the highest number of cars we have seen so far. The parking lot at Stuart Lake trailhead was full at 8am, by noon cars were parked on both sides of the road ignoring no-parking signs and causing delays of over an hour in both directions. Eightmile and Stuart Lake trailheads had a combined total of 460 vehicles parked at 11 AM.
Another four volunteers from the Cascade Education Foundation were stationed at the Barn Beach and Icicle Bridge River Access points while a Recreation Ambassador staff member covered E. Leavenworth Boat Launch. This weekend was extremely busy at the river; Volunteers and staff interacted with over 1200 visitors at river locations. With warmer air and water temperatures, about 20% of recreators were swimming at local beaches rather than floating down the river.
Volunteer Impact:
- Visitor Interactions: 3244 (+248 from last week, +1167 from same week last year)
- Trash Removed: 10.25, 30-Gallon Bags
Survey Highlights (112 respondents):
Visitor Origin:
- 59% of River users surveyed were not from Chelan County
- 83% of Trail users surveyed were visiting from outside the U.S.
- Visitors came from Australia, Canada, Ethiopia, Finland, French Polynesia, and Iran
Recreation Type:
- 47% of hikers surveyed were headed to Colchuck Lake or Stuart Lakes
- 80% of river recreators were using tubes
Conditions Reported:
- 40% reported issues with trail conditions: downed logs, rock fall, overgrown conditions, etc.
- 36% reported issues with human impact: trash, human waste, overcrowding, etc.
Post-Recreation Plans:
- 42% of respondents planned to visit a restaurant after their float or hike
- 48% of respondents planned to return home or to their lodging immediately after their activity
Transportation & Parking
- 58% of river recreators surveyed planned to use the City’s free shuttle. Many users chose to use the City’s free shuttle rather than risk a ticket by parking illegally along Icicle Road.
For more information about the program, or to register as a backup volunteer please email Matt at Recreation@leavenworth.org.

|
Headlines
Can't blame it on the hot weather. Our 7.2% reduction in footfalls happened on a cooler week than the previous year.
REMINDER: The numbers shown below are footfalls; the counting of the number of times a person walks by the camera, not the number of individual people that do so. The reports are based on the retail calendar for 2025.
