Recreation Ambassador Program – Weekend Report 7/11 - 14
|
Weekend Summary:
Recreation Ambassador volunteers were exceptionally busy this weekend despite the heat. Staff assisted recreators at Eight Mile and Stuart Lake trailheads Friday and are out again today (Monday). Additionally, staff directed unloading and parking at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery during the second week of the parking lot closure. The Hatchery parking lot will be locked for the remainder of the season, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service recommending that recreators do not float the river due to low water levels and the potential for harm to salmon spawning habitat.
Six volunteers from UV Young Life staffed the E. Leavenworth Boat Launch, Barn Beach River Access, and Icicle Bridge River Access. Volunteers counted 55 vehicles parked along Icicle Road near Icicle Bridge put-in at 1pm. Volunteers and staff saw heavy use of the City’s free shuttle; parked vehicle counts at the put-ins are down over 50% from the same weekend last year.
Another six volunteers from UV Historical Society staffed Stuart Lake, Eight Mile, and Icicle Gorge Trailheads. At Stuart Lake trailhead volunteers counted 557 vehicles parked at 11am on Saturday. Volunteers reported being so busy assisting recreators and directing parking they had less time to conduct surveys.
Volunteer Impact:
- Visitor Interactions: 2740 (+256 from last week, +1081 from same week last year)
- Surveys Conducted: 35 (28 Forest, 7 River)
- Trash Removed: 18, 30 Gallon Bags
Survey Highlights (35 respondents):
Visitor Origin:
- Only one hiker surveyed was from Chelan County
- Many hikers were international, with visitors from the UK, Netherlands, French Polynesia, and Brazil
- Most users choosing to float Icicle Creek were local residents
Recreation Type:
- Icicle Creek: 50/50 Tubing/Paddleboarding
- Wenatchee River (Icicle Bridge put-in): 80/20
Violations Reported:
- Several groups over the size limit (8). Most were happy to split up when informed of the regulations
Conditions Reported:
- Multiple survey respondents complained of overgrown trail conditions on the Eight Mile, Caroline Lake, and Horseshoe Lake Trailheads.
- Backcountry toilets are beginning to fill, and 4 respondents reported issues with human waste outside of restroom facilities
- Toilet paper restocking continues to be an issue: volunteers stocked roughly 15 rolls of toilet paper at trailhead restrooms this weekend
- One hiker reported encountering 344 other people on his hike to Colchuck
Transportation & Parking
- Trailhead parking continues to be a challenge, with the Stuart Lake and Snow Lakes parking lots filling by 9-10am most days
