Recreation Ambassador Report

Recreation Ambassador Program – Weekend Report August 8/2 & 3

Weekend Summary:

This Friday, Recreation Ambassador staff assisted visitors at Stuart Lake, and Eightmile trailheads. Staff are now stationed at Snow Lakes trailhead Friday-Monday due to high usage.

Six volunteers from Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival staffed the Stuart Lake, Eightmile, and Icicle Gorge Trailheads. Four volunteers from Pinnacles Preparatory Academy staffed the E. Leavenworth Boat Launch and Barn Beach for their first weekend with the program.

This weekend saw slightly fewer visitors than last weekend, mainly due to a quiet Sunday and less river recreators. Saturday was still very busy, with 682 vehicles parked across the 6 volunteer locations at 1pm.

Volunteer Impact:

  • Visitor Interactions: 2469 (Not including Monday)
  • Surveys Conducted: 86
  • Trash Removed: 5 1/2, 30 Gallon Bags
  • Volunteers suggested an appropriate waterfront location for a marriage proposal at Icicle Gorge trail, and were the first to see the new engagement ring.

Survey Highlights

Visitor Origin:

  • 16% of recreators were local (Chelan County)
  • Visitors came from all over the world, with hikers from the Netherlands, and river recreators from El Salvador

Recreation Type:

  • 57% of hikers surveyed were headed to Colchuck or Stuart Lakes
  • 75% of river recreators were tubing

River & Trail Conditions:

  • 15% of river users surveyed complained of issues with trash along the river, while 12% complained of issues with other river users (loud music, etc.)
  • Leavenworth Outdoor Center ran a cleanup on Icicle Creek this week, doing their part to keep our waterways clean for recreators and salmon spawning.
  • Respondents complained about overfull trashcans and lack of toilet paper in trailhead restrooms. Volunteers continue to stock toilet paper at these locations.
  • Most trails in the Enchantments have downed logs, rockfall, or other maintenance issues and may take longer than usual to hike.
  • Trash is becoming an issue especially along the Colchuck Lake trail with FS staff removing significant amounts of trash, including beer cans, along the trail last weekend.

Post-Recreation Plans:

  • 40% of respondents planned to visit a local restaurant after their float or hike
  • 15% planned to visit local shops

Transportation & Parking

  • 50% of river users surveyed were planning to use the City’s free shuttle service, showing increased use and awareness of this service
  • The Chelan County Sheriff's Department has begun enforcing the pre-existing parking ban from MP .10 – MP 1 on Icicle Road (the area around Icicle Bridge Put-in) parking on the side of the road here is prohibited at all times, and can come with a $100 ticket. Parking in designated spots at the Bridge, utilizing the City’s weekend shuttle, or being dropped off can help you avoid a fine.
