Recreation Ambassador Program – Weekend Report 7/4 - 7/6
|
Holiday Weekend Summary 7/4, 7/5, 7/6 & 7/7
Weekend Summary:
Our Recreation Ambassador staff and volunteers were extra busy for the holiday weekend. Staff assisted recreators at Eightmile and Stuart Lake trailheads on Friday and are out again today (Monday). Additionally, staff directed unloading and parking at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery during the first week of the parking lot closure and free shuttle. Six volunteers from UV Young Life staffed the E. Leavenworth Boat Launch, Barn Beach River Access, and Icicle Bridge River Access. An additional six volunteers from UV Historical Society staffed Stuart Lake, Eightmile, and Icicle Gorge Trailheads. At Stuart Lake trailhead, volunteers counted 259 vehicles parked at 11 am on Saturday, with many drivers parked on the wrong side of the road impeding emergency vehicle access.
The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery was also very busy with 43 cars parked along E. Leavenworth Road at 1 pm, and heavy use of the City’s free shuttle. The Hatchery parking lot will be locked for the remainder of the season, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service recommending that recreators do not float the river due to low water levels and the potential for harm to salmon spawning habitat.
Volunteer Impact:
- Visitor Interactions: 2262(+817 from last week, +950 from same week last year)
- Surveys Conducted: 60(57 Forest, 3 River)

- One visitor attempted to light a firework mortar at Colchuck Lake, but was stopped by other recreators!
Conditions Reported:
- Multiple survey respondents complained of dangerously overgrown trail conditions on the Eightmile and Caroline Lake Trailheads
- Trailhead restroom trash cans are overfull. At trailheads without trash cans, trash is beginning to accumulate around the facilities
- There was no toilet paper in the Stuart Lake Trailhead restrooms Saturday morning. Recreation ambassador staff stocked roughly 15 rolls of toilet paper at restrooms.
Transportation & Parking
- 65% of river users surveyed had previously heard about the City’s free river shuttle, several wished it started in June
